Register for the POWER Library User Conference (Spring Training)

The POWER Library Users Conference (Spring Training) registration is open! The sessions will focus on E-Resources, Access PA ILL (SHAREit), and the new PA Photos and Documents digital management tool, Islandora. The training is in-person and will be held at three locations across Pennsylvania.

Participation in Spring Training is included in your annual POWER Library Technology Support fee.

Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8:15 AM. The sessions will begin promptly at 9:00 am and end no later than 2:45 PM. We will email a reminder and directions to you one week before the scheduled session.

Bring a Laptop, iPad, or other Internet Enabled Device
Please bring your own internet-enabled device to the training in order to fully participate. Wi-fi will be available at all locations and power outlets for recharging devices will be available during breaks.

Special notice for PA Photos and Documents (Islandora) participants. To fully participate in those sessions, a laptop (not a tablet) with wifi capability is required.

Act 48 and Continuing Education Information
Attendees may be eligible to receive Act 48 credit hours or CE credits for attending a session. Act 48 credit request forms and CE certificates will be handed out at the end of each training session.

Continental Breakfast and Lunch is Provided!
Lunch generally includes a deli meat or vegetarian sandwich, chips, fruit, and beverage. Anyone with special dietary needs should contact HSLC.

Track A: E-resources
Health and Wellness, GREENR, Research In Context, InfoTrac Student Edition, LitFinder
This session, geared towards public, academic, and school librarians, will provide an overview of 5 Gale e-resources available in the POWER Library portal: Health and Wellness Resource Center, GREENR, Research In Context, InfoTrac Student Edition, and LitFinder. We’ll cover what to expect from each resource, its intended audience, and share best practices for finding what you need and how to drive users to these  resources. We’ll also explore database tools like exporting content to Google Drive/Microsoft OneDrive, text-to-speech, document translation, and more! This session will be led by a Gale trainer.

Track B: Access PA Catalog and ILL Service (SHAREit)
Beginner SHAREit
This beginner SHAREit session will cover training requirements of SHAREit including searching; placing and fulfilling ILL requests; setting up the Participant Record, and the public interface. Beginners will have time to explore the training SHAREit database to put session content into practice. This session also serves as a great refresher for current ILL librarians. This session will be co-taught by an Auto-Graphics representative.

Track C: PA Photos and Documents (Islandora)
Islandora
This beginner session will introduce our new digital library software, Islandora, for PA Photos and Documents, our statewide digital repository. Attendees will learn how to search and browse the new interface from the perspective of a member of the public searching for primary source materials. Participants will learn how to request new digital collections for your institution, along with best practices for basic cataloging with descriptive keyword metadata and procedures to upload your images, texts, multi-page documents, postcards and more to the new platform This session is suitable for anyone interested in digitization, cataloging, archives, digital and special collections. Please note: in order to fully participate in this session, a laptop (PC, Mac or UNIX) with wifi access is required. Tablets will not be able to catalog items in the new software.

Track B: Access PA Catalog and ILL Service (SHAREit)
SHAREit Version 6.0 Update and Advanced Topics
This session will cover upcoming Version 6.0 updates to the SHAREit system, as well as more advanced topics such as full file replacements and viewing failed records, cataloging best practices, statistics and reports, and frequently asked ILL questions .  This session will be co-taught by an Auto-Graphics representative.

Track C: PA Photos and Documents (Islandora)
Intermediate Islandora and Hands-On
This session is split into 2 sections:

The first of two parts is an Intermediate level session that will teach attendees how to bulk-load sets of cataloged items (e.g. photographs, yearbooks, pamphlets, postcards) into Islandora using spreadsheets. Example files and instructions will be provided to all attendees. Participants should have knowledge and comfort with using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet package and saving files to CSV format. Please note: a laptop (PC, Mac, or Unix) is required to actively participate in this session, as tablets cannot be used for these procedures.

The second of two parts is a hands-on practice session where participants can practice cataloging and uploading digital objects into Islandora. While test files will be available, it is recommended that participants bring a few of their own digital records (photographs, yearbooks, pamphlets, postcards, etc.) to test on their own. Please note: a laptop (PC, Mac, or Unix) with wifi access is required to actively participate in this session, as tablets cannot be used for this practice. It is highly recommended to bring a USB key to store files if needed. Participants who wish to practice bulk loading of objects should have access to Excel or another spreadsheet program and a software program that supports file transfer using SFTP such as FIleZilla, CuteFTP, etc.
