SIRS Discoverer Activities and Crafts
(2/14/2005)
A tip of the hat to POWER user Rebecca Shives from the York County Library System who sends the following tip:
Sirs Discoverer provides suggested Christmas activities/crafts. Search on the subject heading Christmas. Select the subject headings Christmas Decorations and Christmas Tree Ornaments. Browse through the list looking for the red letter "a" that indicates an activity.
Tip of the Day #102:
Spotlight of the Month in SIRS Discoverer
(2/15/2005)
Each month, SIRS research staff selects articles as a sampling from the SIRS Discoverer database to encourage research into the new featured topic. Access current 2004 and archived 2003-2004 spotlights by clicking the Spotlight of the Month icon underneath Reference on the main search page.
Tip of the Day #103:
Looking for a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel?
(2/16/2005)
Start a search in NoveList® and click on the 'Best Fiction' link under the 'Browse Lists' heading. For example, in the 'Adult' category, you can follow links to awards lists sorted by genre, including horror, fantasy, westerns, mysteries & thrillers, and science fiction. In particular, under the 'Literary' heading, you'll find a list of current and past winners of the Pulitzer Prize, PEN-Faulkner Award, Nobel Prize, the Booker Prize, and many more.
Tip of the Day #104:
Help someone get a jump on their next job interview
(2/17/2005)
EBSCO's Business Source Premier® database contains 10,000 Company Profiles and over 3,000 Industry Reports. To help you gauge the job market, Business Source Premier also contains nearly 530 market research reports.
Tip of the Day #105:
Help middle school students select research topics
(2/18/2005)
A tip of the hat to Mary Ann Stewart from Oil City Area Middle School/Oakland Elementary School who sends the following tip:
To help middle school students select a topic for their research paper, print out the list of topics from Facts for Learning's "Issues in the News." The topics are a little advanced for lower students, but the articles provide complete coverage of a topic plus sidebar articles related to the topic. Complete citation for each article is provided at the end of each article.
Tip of the Day #106:
Are students in your library currently studying geography?
(2/22/2005)
They can find a variety of map types (political, demographic, etc.) for most regions of the world in EBSCO's Image Collection. The Image Collection is accessed via the "Images" button on the tool bar of most EBSCOhost® databases. The collection also contains thousands of other images (e.g., people, places, flags), which are organized by category for easy searching.
Tip of the Day #107:
Need to find recent popular titles on a topic?
(2/23/2005)
A tip of the hat to POWER user Rebecca Shives from the York County Library System who sends the following tip:
Need to find recent popular titles on a topic? Use Book Index with Reviews as a collection development tool. Search for your topic - such as dog training. When you get a list of titles, click on the drop-down menu next to "Sort by." Choose "Popularity" from the drop-down list. The list will re-sort with the most popular titles (based on sales) at the top.
